SOAR Event

SOAR Champions for Children Biennial Recognition Event.

On Friday, April 15, 2011, more than 130 individuals came together to honor early childhood and school age teachers for their educational accomplishments. Certificates were presented to individuals in King County who had completed a CDA, Associates, Bachelor or Masters degree in the previous two years. In addition, recognition was given to family child care providers who have achieved accreditation during this period through the National Association for Family Child Care (NAFCC), as well as their child care center counterparts who have become accredited through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the National Accreditation Commission (NAC), or the Council on Accreditation- National Afterschool Association (COA-NAA).

At this Recognition Event, SOAR Champions for Children for the first time also recognized instructors who have made a difference. Students nominated instructors who teach classes leading to a CDA, and instructors at 2 and 4 year higher Ed institutions. As one student wrote, in support of the instructor she nominated, “Minds are like parachutes, they only function when open. She has opened my mind to the endless possibilities when working with children.” This year SOAR Champions for children recognized Amber Havens, Tom Drummond and the Highline Community College education department as “Distinguished Instructors.”

Thank you to the sponsors of the event: Child Care Resources, Childhood Matters Conference, Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce, Renton Technical College, School’s Out Washington, SOAR, United Way of King County, Washington State Child Care Resource & Referral Network.

Congratulations to the honorees!
